The huge demand from classic vehicle customers and the restoration requirements of the workshop in the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center spawned the idea of reproducing leather.
Traditional tanner expertise and a sense of tradition are called for to replicate the character of the leather produced in those bygone days. Compliance with current environmental standards and the avoidance of long manufacturing processes were equally important. Intensive development work with the series-production leather supplier has enabled the current Mercedes-Benz standards to be met.
The impressive results of the reproduction are reflected in the authentic properties such as shine, structure, smell and touch, all produced on the basis of mainly traditional manufacturing processes. At the same time, tests for light-fastness, flammability, scratch resistance and abrasion were conducted and passed. In this respect the aim was to manufacture these products using vegetable tanning agents in the groundbreaking time of just two days.
The leather can only be ordered as complete hides, each of which measures around six square metres. Prices are based on a square metre of leather:
