Daimler-Benz AG established its own exhibition of historical vehicles as early as 1936, drawing on a collection of vehicles which dated back to 1911. As the range of vehicles grew, a decision was made in the 1950s to build the first museum. The Mercedes-Benz Museum was inaugurated in February 1961. It was modified to create space for additional vehicles in 1986 to mark the 100th anniversary of the automobile.
The company-owned classic car workshop has been retaining the exhibits in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in fully operational condition right from the start. It has always been and continues to be the declared aim of all activities to maintain all exhibits – many of them milestones of automotive engineering – as well as the company’s production cars, experimental vehicles and legendary racing cars. In the course of the years, the workshop has acquired a tremendous wealth of expert knowledge, experience and competence relating to all Mercedes-Benz model series and the predecessor brands. Skills which are not described in any repair instruction or workshop manual but have been passed on from generation to generation in the classic car workshop of Mercedes-Benz.
Since the inauguration of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center, customers from in and outside Germany have been benefiting from this experience. With launch of the New Mercedes-Benz Museum, the services of the workshop are presented to an even broader public. All vehicles and exhibits on display in the museum were prepared in the workshop of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center. They incorporate the expert skills and knowledge of all workshop staff at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center – the combined experience of several generations.
